I think this poem is transitioning between the seasons, mainly winter and summer. It seems like he lives somewhere cold, such as Alaska or the Arctic’s like the name of the poem, because he talks about ice melting and animals coming out or going into hibernation. He’s happy when it first becomes summer, because everything starts to awaken again. He might be living as one of the animals,
“While I, upon his isle of snow, Seek and defy the bear. Fierce though he be, and huge of frame, This arm his savage strength shall tame, And drag him from his lair.”
When winter is coming along again, he says he will build his house of ice (an igloo?). I just wonder why he would want to live that way.
I think the reason this poem is called the Arctic Lover, is because he loves living where its always cold and seeing all the different ways of animal life throughout the changing of the seasons.
Oh wow Hillary I didn’t even think about the transitioning of seasons. I just thought it was about someone who loves the cold and the arctic, but since you mentioned it, it makes sense (especially since he says “the summer is begun.”). He enjoys watching things change.
I thought this poem was really cute. It made me smile!! And I really like the way Bryant describes things. He uses such detail and it makes it more interesting to read.
Hillary, that's a good point. The poem definitely shows the transitions of the seasons and the differences each season brings about.
My favorite line in the poem is definitely where he says, "The willows, waked from winter's death, Give out a fragrance like thy breath-- The summer is begun!" It shows the change in emotion between seasons, and how he feels hope and excitement as summer approaches.
I agree with Jessica on Bryant's strength in description. I think his detail paints a clear picture in the readers head.
I personally thought this was one of the harder stories/poems to read. I had to go through it a few times to actually grasp what I felt it was about. He does use a lot of imagery, but to me it almost feels like too much because I was very confused.

Ya Neda I also really liked how he shows so much emotion in his writting. It helps you visualize all the pictures he tries to paint.
It makes it a lot easier to read.

It almost reminds me of The Road because it's so in depth that you have to re read it a couple of times to fully understand it.
I was a little confused at first to but I just tried to get past it and realized that it gives a somewhat happy feeling.
Ohh Neda I didn't even think of that but you're so right!! It deffinatly reminds me of The Road!
hats funny that you both had a hard time reading the road, because that I actually understood!!
I also wanted to add that I can relate to him liking summer more, because its my favorite season. =]
