I think “The Winged Sphinx” is a poem saying that even in the darkest of times, there still may be some good.

While its own form the riddle tells
That baffled all the wizard spells
Drawn from intellectual wells,
Cold waters where truth never dwells:
--It was fable told you so;--

I think by this she means that you shouldn’t go around believing everything that people say and that you need to find the truth out for yourself. She’s saying that you should be your own person, not what others think you should be and if you don’t like what’s going on, you should change it for the better.

So I agree with Hillary. I also think she was trying to say that even in bad times there could be some good, you just have to seek it out. After I read this poem I thought of the quote “There’s a silver lining to every cloud.”

Margaret Fuller ends this poem saying, “Seek her in common daylight glow.” I really like that. It leaves you on a positive note to look for the good in all the bad situation life throws at you.

Jessicaa! I like the way you think. I didn't even think about the ending leaving you with a happy note, but it really does. Also, I love the use of your quote "There's a silver lining to every cloud," because thats definitely true in everyday life and I think it totally applies to this poem.

Why thank you!!

I think by her ending the poem that can maybe give some hope.

And I really like that quote too. I think it's something everyone should remember.

The first time I read this poem it made no sense. But after reading what you guys had to say about it I re read it and it began to make more sense. I agree with Hillary that Margaret Fuller is trying to show that good always comes from bad situations.

I think where she says "It was fable told you so" she's trying to get across the point that sometimes in your life you have to be told a lie to realize the truth.

Good point Neda!! I didn't even think of that but it's so true! Sometimes you do have to be told a lie for everything to make sense and realize what's right.

Exactly! It's one of those things you have to see for yourself to learn.

I can definitely relate to that. There's been many times when it was sort of like I was living a lie, but once I began to realize it, I found the truth in my life. If that makes any sense at alll...

No Hillary it makes sense! At least to me it does. I've been in situations like that before and it helps when you finally start to see things for what they really are.

It makes complete sense, I think everyone has to go through it at some point.

Yeah, its a really difficult life experience, but everyone goes through it and sometimes it happens more than once, but it changes you for the better I believe.

I think that makes sense. It makes you into the person you become in the end, and things have to make and break you to get you to that point.

Exactly. There's so many ups and downs in life you just have to learn to deal with them correctly.
